Danny explained about his trip to Japan, and his discovery of canned coffee over there. Robert Herjavec asked Danny where the idea had come from. The Sharks liked the coffee, several on them remarked on the pleasant taste and Danny revealed that he had changed the recipe over 1,500 times during six years of development, in order to get a product that tasted great, yet could be heated continually for up to three months. Mark Cuban was quick to point out that 140 degrees was usually considered quite warm, and Danny took the opportunity to mention the insulated label that absorbed 50% of the heat, leaving the cup still quite comfortably warm, rather than too hot to hold. He handed out drinks to the sharks and Lori Greiner remarked how warm the can was. ‘Gotta try it’ said Robert Herjavec, and Danny was ready with some samples. Hotshot was the first ‘Grab and go, ready to drink in a can coffee product available in America’, and he asked which of them was willing to join the coffee revolution, and become a Hotshot themselves. With Hotshot they could just grab a hot drink from a hotbox, and never have to make a cup, or stand in line ever again. He launched into his pitch by telling the sharks that he had developed the ultimate convenience in hot coffee, perfect for busy coffee-lovers who were always busy in the mornings. Hotshot On Shark Tankĭanny came to the tank hoping a gain an investment of $300,000, in exchange for 10% of his company. Producers from Shark Tank contacted Danny because they liked his passion and drive, as well as the tenacity he had shown throughout years of product development, they invited him to appear on the show and he eventually entered the tank in October 2015. But the LA times article also had another, more positive side effect. The Hotshot business was featured in the Los Angeles Times and Danny had an opportunity to promote his Kickstarter campaign, but unfortunately not many others shared his vision, and the campaign, which had a target of $80,000, eventually raised less than $10,000. Danny pushed ahead with a production run of 4,000 hotbox units, and turned to the crowd-funding site Kickstarter to finance the operation. He eventually sunk over two million dollars into his dream, and in early 2015 things seemed to be progressing well, as a test run of 1,000 cans had met with a very positive reaction from testers. After thousands of tweaks to his formula, he eventually perfected the recipe, and also devised the Hotbox, a heating unit that could keep the drinks permanently heated, to 140 degrees, for as long as three months.ĭanny managed to fund the production process and expensive molds with his own cash, alongside additional funding he sought out from family and friends. The entrepreneur began experimenting with his own version of the drink, and a convenient way to heat the product up. The canned hot-drink market in Japan is a multi billion dollar industry He soon discovered that the canned coffee business was a multi-billion dollar market in Japan, which trails only behind America and Germany in terms of average coffee consumption. Eventually he gave up on the idea, and went to a cooler in the back of a store to buy a soda, but he was pleasantly surprised that what he had thought was a cooler was in fact the exact opposite, it was a heated unit for ready to drink coffee cans.ĭanny had discovered the Japanese market for hot beverages in a can, and he liked the idea so much that when he returned to the United States he began to research the size of the potential market. The New York native went to a series of stores in an attempt to get his caffeine fix, but found to his surprise that none of them appeared to have any hot coffee available. Hotshot Now in 2023 – The After Shark Tank Updateĭanny Grossfeld was visiting Tokyo, Japan on a business trip in 2008 when he found himself in desperate need of a cup of coffee, at five o clock in the morning. Jazaerle will continue to study Korean during his military career, constantly growing as a fluent speaker as he adds his assigned language to his growing list of languages. “Lebanon was not an easy place to grow up, but I always saw the way that the military carried themselves, the mentality they had, and always wanted to be a part of that.” They were always very nice, disciplined, well-spoken, everything I’ve always wanted to be,” says Jazaerle. I used to go to the American Embassy in Beirut and meet a lot of service members there. Completing this mission to serve my country is my motivation to continue.”Īlong with his enthusiasm to become a linguist, for Jazarele, joining the Air Force is more important than the job itself. Yes, there’s a lot of stress, but how many people do you know that can say they’re being paid to learn another language?” Jazaerle says, “When you listen to leadership talk about how important DLIFLC students are, it makes me feel like we’re needed. Jazaerle balances his time between going to class, exercising at the gym, studying at home, and working to become a student leader within the 314th TRS.ĭespite the stress of the training, Jazaerle says he feels incredibly fortunate to study at DLIFLC, feeling valued and respected by the instructors on base. You learn how to dedicate your time properly and stay focused on the mission, which is learning your language.” “You can’t do everything, and you can’t fit everything into one time. It’s mainly all about time management,” says Jazaerle. “It was a little bit of a shock to get into, but then you get accustomed to it. Of all the many challenges students face while in training, Jazaerle says time management is the most difficult. “Every three days, we’re done with a chapter, and every three weeks we’re done with a unit,” said Jazaerle. In order to ensure that students get proper exposure to their target language, the language courses move at an accelerated pace. The Korean language course spans 64 weeks and takes students who have no experience with the language and transforms them into fluent speakers. It gave me a lot of time to familiarize myself with the environment, and get a head start on the classwork,” said Jazaerle, “I knew nothing about Korean before I got started, so I started familiarizing myself with the alphabet so that I could pronounce words, even if I didn’t know what I was saying yet.”ĭLIFLC is one of the most mentally demanding training environments the DoD has to offer, training students from all branches in 15 different languages from across the globe. “For the first 20 days, I was on details. Jazaerle began studying Korean as soon as he arrived at POM, even before he had officially started class. When asked what he liked most about the Korean language, Jazaelre launched into an excited speech about how the language’s structure functions, and how much he enjoys the strict pattern of speech. “Although I was hoping to be assigned a language I already spoke in order to brush up on my skills, Korean has been a blessing in disguise for me because now I get to pick up a fifth language.”Īfter growing up in trilingual households in both Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, Jazaerle said his passion for learning languages continues to grow in the training environment. “I already speak Arabic, French, Spanish, and English,” said Airman 1st Class Omar Jazaerle, 314th Training Squadron linguist student. Linguist students begin their technical training at DLIFLC where they are put through an intensive language learning course before graduating and moving on to their next step of intelligence training at Goodfellow Air Force Base.Īlthough learning Korean is a new journey for Jazaerle, studying forging languages is not. Jazaerle is attending DLIFLC as a student within the 314th Training Squadron where he studies to become an airborne cryptologic linguist. Although the blend of tongues may be nothing more than a confusing barrage of international conversations for some, in the case of Airman 1st Class Omar Jazaerle it’s an exercise in memory.Īs home to the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, the Presidio of Monterey trains all linguists across the Department of Defense. At the Aiso Library, it’s common to see students chattering away in all manner of languages found across the globe. Multiple languages can be heard amongst the gentle sweep of turning pages and the scrape of pencils on paper. You got the impression people had been here before trying this approach. When I said I wanted to learn more about Frances Bavier, she grew silent. I found the woman working in the back of her shop. “She’s the daughter of Miss Bavier’s best friend, the one she came out here for.” I asked, “Is there anyone in town who knows her well, whom I could talk to?” He thought for a minute and named a local woman who ran a craft store. A man came over and said, “I suppose we’ve written a few articles on her, but that was a long time ago. In fact, she was not real sure who Frances Bavier was. The young woman on the front desk did not know of any articles they had written about her. I left my card in the front door and drove to the newspaper office. I walked up to the door and knocked several times without a response. The house would have fit in any middle class neighborhood in the country. So this is where a Hollywood star retires. Stays inside with a houseful of cats.” She described the two story brick-and-rock facade house which I located a dozen blocks away. She smiled and said, “I can tell you where she lives, but you won’t be able to see her. Inside the village of Siler City, I aimed at the tall white spire of the First Baptist Church where I introduced myself to the secretary as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Charlotte. I might not be able to actually meet her, but one never knows about these things, and I surely would not if I did not try. By the late 1980s we were living in Charlotte and I learned that Miss Bavier, perhaps in her 80s by now, had retired to Siler City. I knew then that I would be taking an afternoon and driving to Siler City to find Aunt Bee.įrances Bavier had played the aunt to Andy Taylor and son Opie in the 60s sitcom “The Andy Griffith Show.” Over the years, along with much of America, I loved the program more in reruns than when it was fresh. There it lay in the center of the state, about an hour’s drive from the conference center where I would be spending three days. The belongings will be auctioned this spring, said Bob Royster, production director for the public television center.I got down the North Carolina map and looked up Siler City. The walls were mostly bare except for a few ordinary electric wall clocks.Īnd while Aunt Bee was known around the fictitious Mayberry, N.C., courthouse for her tasty box lunches, there was only one cookbook in Miss Bavier’s yellow and green 1950s kitchen. But what she made with the material was not evident in the house, which had no curtains at the windows. Just as the neat, matronly Aunt Bee would have done, Miss Bavier saved sewing fabric in labeled boxes in a bedroom closet. There also was a blue satin gown she may have worn when she won her Emmy Award, said Hatch. The few mementos of the actress’ television days were the dress and hats she wore in the show and a few publicity pictures. Miss Bavier’s few costly possessions consisted primarily of some rare leather-bound books, a lace collection and a considerable quantity of table linens, said Hatch. Two trunks held her fan mail, letters in one and studio portraits of her “to be signed” in another. could have had non-stop fans if she had opened her doors,” said Hatch. “I think she was a person who obviously valued her privacy. Her cats apparently used a basement room and a shower stall as a litter box.Įvidently, the reclusive actress spent most of her time in a large back room plainly furnished with a bed, a desk, a television and an end table, where she kept her reading and opera glasses, black licorice and a bell. The stench from the actress’ 14 cats coupled with peeling plaster, frayed carpets and worn upholstery indicate Miss Bavier either was unable or unwilling to spend much time keeping up the home. If you’re down with the wisdom of crowds, it’s a killer addition. Most notably, CellarTracker includes integrated wine reviews and ratings averages from its legions of users, and access to professional reviews as well (though these cost extra). But what it lacks in cellar sophistication it makes up for with thoughtful additions you won’t find anywhere else. Most other databases have a separate entry for every vintage, making it tough to find the exact wine you need.) All told, this app was by a wide margin the fastest and easiest way to digitize my wine cellar information.ĬellarTracker doesn’t have the fancy graphical cellar representation that VinoCellar and Vinoteka offer rather, you simply assign a bin number to each wine, and it’s up to you to keep your bins straight. (Favorite feature: First you add a wine, and then you pick the vintage from a quick panel of common options. Whoever developed CellarTracker has a real knack for understanding intuitive software design, putting most of the critical functions right where you need them. I had just a few instances with older wines where CellarTracker didn’t recognize the UPC (keyword search still worked, though), and only one where the scanner couldn’t get a read on the label, probably due to the curvature of the bottle distorting the image. The scanner is fast and intuitive, and there’s even a much-needed button that activates your phone’s flash bulb to illuminate the UPC when you’re in your dark cellar, making the chances for a successful scan much higher. Unlike many other systems that promise this kind of functionality, CellarTracker’s actually works and works very well. However, the app does at least sync automatically and quickly among multiple devices. Frustratingly, the app doesn’t even automatically capitalize each word in a winery’s name as you type it, slowing you down during data entry considerably. That said, it’s a slow slog with almost no automation, and when you’re done, the data isn’t very useful. Cellar doesn’t manage racks, bins, or handle any other location information, although a timeline feature does at least let you see when you added wines and when you removed them.Ĭellar is easy to use, and anyone with a basic grasp of iOS should have no trouble adding information to the system. When you’ve added your wines and indicated how many bottles you own of each one… well, you’re done. There’s not even room for notes, ratings, or much of anything else. You can then add information to a few additional, optional fields-but the one that matters most, the price of the wine, isn’t an option here. Add a vintage and you’re finished with the basics. The overly simplistic Cellar in no way justifies the subscription fee its developer expects to collect for oenophiles.Īfterwards, you are required to add a wine name (whether it has one or not), so you’ll need to get used to tapping out “Cabernet Sauvignon” on your tablet or phone. Tap the + icon to add a bottle and type in the name of the producer (Cellar offers some suggested wine names as you type, but it’s knowledgebase is deathly shallow.) The app honestly could not be simpler to use, as all it does is track basic inventory information. Communities of escaped or released feral cockatoos exist in China and Hong Kong. This is the Yellow-Crested Cockatoo ( Cacatua sulphurea), native to Indonesia and East Timor. This is not one we see flying around Austin, but one just as noticeable and loved as the Monk Parakeet. There is another example of a pet bird with a somewhat similar story as that of the Monk Parakeets. Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic license. Yellow-Crested Cockatoo (Photo: Charles Lam. Beyond this, more research needs to be done to establish what other environmental damage, if any, Monk Parakeets have caused. The nests can also catch fire because of their proximity to wires. The damage they do is to electrical lines and utility poles which can cause power outages. However, they have not yet been observed to do what was feared. Initial worry about Monk Parakeets being invasive was that they could become an agriculture pest. This attentive treatment of the Monk Parakeet is followed in other parts of the country, with states like New Jersey and New York proposing laws to protect the bird. When nests are displaced, Austin Energy follows strict protocol to avoid harming the birds, chicks, or eggs. UT’s intramural fields had several nests in the field light towers before the lights were replaced, displacing the nests. These nests are massive creations, weighing up to 400 pounds, high up in cell phone towers and utility poles. Monk Parakeets survive cold weather by building large elaborate nests where several mating pairs live. Some of these cities include New Orleans, Portland, Miami, and even Chicago! The fact that many Austin populations of the Monk Parakeet survived the historic 2021 winter storm Uri attests to their remarkable tolerance to weather extremes. Monk Parakeets are very hardy and can survive a wide temperature range, allowing them to adapt to many different US cities. However, as it’s next to impossible to know who might have released these birds, their entry to Austin still remains unknown. He speculates 19 monk parakeets were intentionally released in the 1980s near Zilker Park, and the current population descends from that colony. Cliff Shackelford, an ornithologist for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, started monitoring the birds in Austin in the late 1990s. The Monk Parakeet was introduced to the US in the 1950s and 1960s from South America through the exotic pet trade. There is even a mural here in Austin honoring the bird. Plenty of articles on this bird exist, probably due in no small part to its prevalence across the US, as well as its charm. The beloved Monk Parakeet ( Myiopsitta monachus), sometimes also called “Monk Parrot” or “Quaker Parakeet,” chattering away on power lines and cell phone towers.
